From brief to binding

A book we made.

One storybook, from the brief the giver wrote to the hardcover that arrived at the door. Edition of one.

The brief arrived on a Tuesday. It named one reader — a woman turning sixty-three who had a dog named Pepper and a habit of falling asleep on the sofa with a particular book she had read three times. The giver knew all of this. That is what a brief is.

Juno read the brief that morning. She walked. She came back to the desk and wrote thirty-two pages in pencil. On Thursday she was done. The press printed and bound the book. On Friday it shipped.

The book arrived on a Saturday. The woman cried. She named Pepper on the dedication page, which was the part the giver had not mentioned to anyone. One edition. The press reset.
